It's sad how often the Book of Judges goes overlooked. Samson's story eerily parallels the modern masculinity crisis. I'm so glad you included it here.
Great piece. Of course the ancient world takes us from conqueror not only to martyr, but to Christ, King and Conqueror, as well. Mightier than Achilles by far.
Can you share some good, illustrative examples of ways in which the thumotic is often intentionally hammered out of young men/cultivating them to be soft, passive, and indecisive?
To play a little bit of Devil's advocate (with some partiality): How does a Christian man toe the line between that ancient desire for greatness and the Christian call for humility? I don't want to sell greatness to men, when they are not called to it. More likely than not, most of us would not have been Caesars or Alexanders, but nameless, forgotten peasants. But through Christ do we see the grandeur of the person and the honor bestowed upon the baptized. But to put a feather in our caps, it's still good to read the great stories and have our own little greatnesses😉
